The following are required beyond the course requirements
in each program for New York State certification at both the
secondary and elementary levels.
Those applying for New York State teaching certification
must take a two- to three-hour workshop dealing with recognizing
signs of child abuse. While the Warner School does not offer
this workshop, the names of agencies
that offer the exam can be provided. Upon completion of the workshop, you
must obtain a transcript or written confirmation of completion,
which is required for application for certification by New
York State.
Students recommended (or applying on their own) for New York
State teaching certification must have completed two semesters
of a college-level foreign language or its equivalent. The
required two semesters must be in one language (e.g., two
semesters of German or two semesters of French, not one semester
of German and one semester of French).
Students recommended (or applying on their own) for New York
State teaching certification must take the New York State
Teacher Certification Examination, which includes the following:
For Provisional Certification
The Liberal Arts and Science Test (LAST)
The Assessment of Teaching Skills-Written (ATS-W)
(Elementary Assessment for elementary teachers; Secondary
Assessment for secondary teachers; either the Elementary Assessment
or the Secondary Assessment for E.S.O.L. teachers)
For E.S.O.L. Only
The English Language Proficiency Assessment for Classroom
Personnel (ELPA-C)
For Permanent Certification
The Content Specialty Test (CST) (the E.S.O.L. Assessment
for E.S.O.L. teachers)
The Assessment of Teaching Skills-Performance (ATS-P) (video)
To obtain permanent certification, those holding provisional
certification and the master's degree must complete two years
of full-time teaching in the area for which provisional certification
is held.
If you wish the Warner School to make an application for
you to the State of New York, you must meet requirements and
follow instructions stated in the Certification Memo, which
is available in relevant certification courses at the beginning
of each semester.
Certificate of Qualification, Provisional Certification,
and Permanent Certification
The Certificate of Qualification (CQ) and the Provisional
Certificate are valid for employment as an elementary or secondary
school teacher. If you are newly certified and are not employed
full time in a school, or if you do not have an offer of full-time
employment in a school, you are issued the CQ. It is valid
for five years, during which time you may substitute in schools
until a permanent job is secured. When you accept a regular
position in a school, the CQ must be exchanged for the Provisional
Certificate. You then have five additional years in which
to complete the requirements for permanent certification-to
teach full time for two years, earn a master's degree, and
pass the examinations for permanent certification. If, however,
the initial five-year period elapses and a teaching position
has not been secured, the CQ must be exchanged for a Provisional
Certificate. Then, five additional years remain in which to
obtain permanent certification.
