Donna Marie Harris researches school reform, educational policy, and the social organization of public schools and classrooms. She is particularly interested in understanding how educational institutions, policies, and practices affect learning opportunities and experiences—especially for students of color. She explores how teacher expectations affect the application of educational standards and the impact race has on elementary school reading ability group placement. Harris’ expertise includes ability grouping and tracking, whole school reform, standards-based education, and high-stakes testing. She teaches courses in school reform, educational policy, and race and education.
