| Susan Hetherington
holds joint appointments at the Warner School and in the Department
of Pediatrics in the Medical School, where she is an assistant
professor of clinical pediatrics, associate director for exemplary
services at the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities,
and director of the Kirch Developmental Services Center. At
Warner, Hetherington, a former first grade and resource room
teacher, teaches courses on disability and inclusive education
and serves as the Outreach Coordinator for Inclusive Education
for the Warner Center for Professional Development and Education
Reform. She also serves as an advisor for the non-degree autism
program, and holds New York State certification in elementary
education and K-12 special education.
Her research interests include the social construction of
disability and disability categories, the development of inclusive
schools, and cultural differences in the perceptions of disabilities.
She has written and received funding for a variety of teacher
education grants from the Federal Office of Special Education
and Rehabilitative Services, and consults with a number of
school districts around issues of developing inclusive classrooms
and schools.
