Faculty Position in Counseling & Counselor Education
The Counseling and Human Development Program in the University of Rochester’s Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development seeks applications for a nine-month, full time, tenure track position as assistant or associate professor in the area of counseling and counselor education beginning July 1, 2008.
The Warner School’s CACREP-accredited doctoral and master’s counseling programs prepare students to become practitioners, counselor educators, community leaders, and agents of social change. Incorporating knowledge from contemporary counseling and psychotherapy research, the Warner School counseling curriculum is informed by a developmental and humanistic orientation to intervention strategy, a commitment to clinical implementation of multicultural understanding, an appreciation of the larger contextual forces shaping mental health outcomes, and a view of the counselor as an advocate for social justice as well as individual helper. The Rochester area offers a wide array of community resources for research and clinical instruction, and the University, rated recently by U.S. News and World Reports as one of 25 “New Ivies”, offers opportunities for collaboration across disciplines.
Expectations for Successful Candidates
Responsibilities for this faculty position include: teaching doctoral and master’s level courses related to our Community Mental Health curriculum; engaging in research and scholarly writing; supervising doctoral dissertations, especially in the area of mental health counseling; advising and mentoring master’s and doctoral students including supervision of master’s degree capstone projects; and participating in university, school, community, and professional service. More broadly, we expect candidates who are willing to participate and provide leadership in a growing program and are attracted to the mission and objectives of our program.
The Warner School is searching for applicants who possess a doctorate (or will complete their doctorate by the start date) in Counselor Education, Mental Health Counseling or a closely related field. Preferably, candidates will have experience as a student and/or faculty member in a CACREP-accredited institution; a knowledge of mental health assessment tools, DSM diagnosis, treatment planning, and empirically supported mental health intervention; a clinical orientation embedded in humanistic and developmental helping strategies; a commitment to issues of diversity and social justice; expertise in an area of research methods or program evaluation; and evidence regarding excellence or potential for excellence in teaching, scholarly publication, leadership and professional service. Professional counseling experience is expected and the candidate must be licensed or license eligible to practice mental health counseling or phsychotherapy in the state of New York.
The Warner School Work Environment
The Counseling Program at the Warner School provides a rich and dynamic setting for teaching, pursuing research, and making a difference in the community. Our master’s graduate students are bright, interesting, and represent many dimensions of diversity. Our doctoral students are mature professionals drawn from an international base who provide intellectual stimulation and colleagueship.
In the past few years, our program has expanded its counseling faculty, achieved CACREP accreditation, and doubled its student enrollment. We have also made adjustments in our curriculum to accommodate the recently instituted Mental Health Counseling licensure in New York State. A new faculty member will be welcomed into a setting where faculty and student morale is high and where he or she can make an imprint on the program.
