Information on How to Apply and Review Process

At the Warner School, we recognize the critical role and importance of faculty hiring. Therefore, over the last few years we have developed a carefully thought-out process to conduct our faculty searches, which has already served us well in recent searches. We believe it is in our interest as well as the applicants’ that they know as much as possible about this process upfront.

Preparing Your Application

What to submit
While we welcome any information that you think would be helpful in evaluating your application, we request that all applicants send us, at the minimum, the following documentation:

  1. A letter of application stating scholarly and teaching interests. This cover letter will help us evaluate your “fit” with the position as well as provide a context to look at the rest of your materials. Therefore, it would be very useful if you can identify the kinds of courses you are interested in teaching. In addition, we have found it helpful when candidates to tenure-track positions clearly articulate their overall research interests; short- and long-term research goals; and research methodologies in which they have expertise. Conversely, we encourage applicants to clinical positions to articulate their goals in terms of applied research, dissemination projects and other professional activities they are interested in conducting to influence educational policies and practices.
  2. Current curriculum vita.
  3. Writing samples. Provide electronic or hardcopy samples of scholarly or professional work that best relate to the position for which you are applying. If you choose to send more than 3-4 samples, please identify the 3-4 pieces that you think represent the best of your work, so as to ensure that the search committee and other faculty will give them full consideration. Applicants are encouraged to provide sample syllabi of courses taught (if any) at the university level.
  4. Letters of reference. Provide 2-4 reference letters. Reference letters can either be mailed from the original author directly to the Warner School, or provided in a sealed envelop with the author’s signature written across the seal and included as part of your application package. Please be sure we receive your reference letters in a timely manner so they can be given full consideration.

Please feel free to include any additional materials that you think can help evaluate your potential and fit for the advertised position.

If you think that your background and interest may fit more than one of the positions advertised, please make this explicit in your application letter and send only one application package.

Key Steps and Timeline for the Review Process

We are planning to follow the process and timeline outlined below in our review of applications for all of the advertised faculty positions:

  • All applications received by the deadline will be reviewed by the search committee and the entire Warner School faculty to identify candidates to be invited for a campus interview. Depending on the result of these campus interviews and the applications received after the deadline, additional campus interviews may be also arranged.
  • Each campus interview will last approximately one whole day. Applicants will be asked to give a colloquium for Warner faculty and students. Additional details about the campus interview are provided below.
  • After all campus interviews for a given search are completed, a decision will be made about whether to make an offer to one of the candidates interviewed up to that point or to continue the search.

What to Expect for the Campus Interview

The campus interview is designed to serve two complementary needs: to provide an opportunity for the Warner faculty to evaluate the potential of each candidate; and to give each candidate the chance to evaluate the Warner School and determine if its mission, goals, and offerings are aligned with their personal and professional goals and interests. Therefore, we have structured the campus interview to address both of these needs within the time constraints of a one-day visit.

Campus interviews usually include the following activities:

  • A breakfast meeting to discuss the position’s responsibilities and expectations in detail.
  • Morning meetings with individual faculty or staff to provide information about working at the Warner School. In addition, a campus tour may be arranged.
  • Lunch with doctoral students.
  • Candidate’s colloquium followed by questions/response session (1.5 hours total, with the candidate’s presentation taking no more than half of the time).
  • Group meeting with program faculty to discuss the candidate's teaching and research interests, program needs, and “fit”.
  • Meeting with the Dean.

An informal dinner with faculty members and, whenever possible, doctoral students and community members, will be arranged on the day of the campus interview or the day before, depending on the candidate’s travel plans.

If a candidate would like to visit local schools or specific project sites, or would like a tour of the Rochester area, we would be happy to make arrangements for an extended visit if informed in advance.

We encourage candidates to discuss their plans for the colloquium with their contact person to clarify expectations and provide details about the room setup and technology requirements. The following guidelines are provided to prepare for and support this conversation:

  • All candidates should be prepared to provide a brief introduction of themselves, their professional work to date, and their career goals, to help provide a context for their specific presentation.
  • Candidates for tenure-track positions are expected to prepare a research presentation (similar to what they could give at AERA, ACA, or other professional conferences, but taking into consideration that here the audience will include mostly educators from fields other than their own).
  • Candidates for clinical positions are expected to present on their philosophical perspective and professional contributions with respect to their field.
  • All candidates should be prepared to answer questions not only related to their specific presentation, but also about other aspects of their professional experience and plans.

The University of Rochester is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Employer. Women and minority-group members are encouraged to apply.
