Hursh Contributes to Book, Presents in England
David Hursh,
associate professor, teaching and curriculum, contributed
the chapter "Discourse, Power and Resistance in New York:
The rise of testing and accountability and the decline of
teacher professionalism and local control" to Discourse,
Power, and Resistance: Challenging the rhetoric of contemporary
education (Stylus Publishing, LLC May 2003). In addition,
Hursh presented "Aligning the pre k_16 Knowledge Supply
Chain: Corporate and governmental intrusion into higher education"
in April at the conference "Discourse, Power, and Resistance:
New Directions, New Moves" in Plymouth, England.
Borasi Receives Distinguished Alumni Award
Raffaella Borasi,
dean, is receiving the University at Buffalo Graduate School
of Education Distinguished Alumni Award from the Department
of Learning and Instruction this year. She was honored at
the University's commencement exercises and a commencement
luncheon on May 9. The award, given annually, is determined
by University at Buffalo faculty.
Faculty Present at American Counseling Association's Annual
Convention
Three counseling and human development faculty presented at
the American Counseling Association's Annual Convention in
Anaheim, Cal. in March. Howard
Kirschenbaum, chair, presented "Sentenced to the
Chair: Successes and Challenges Operating Counselor Education
Programs." Doug
Guiffrida, assistant professor, presented "Preparing
African American Students for College at a PWI" (predominantly
white institution). Kathryn
Douthit, assistant professor presented "Toxic Poverty:
The Environmental Impacts of Economic Hardship on Mental Health."
James-Wilson Leads Panel Discussion on Gordon Parks
Sonia James-Wilson,
assistant professor, teaching and curriculum, led "Exploring
Issues of Representation in the Work of Gordon Parks: Half
Past Autumn Screening and Artist/Scholar Panel Discussion"
in March at the Dryden Theatre in the George Eastman House.
The discussion was part of a series of events surrounding
the retrospective exhibition of more than 200 images of Parks
works.
New Faculty Member Joins Educational Leadership
Dean Borasi has announced the addition of Kara
Finnigan to the educational leadership faculty. Finnigan
is a Ph.D. candidate in Educational Policy Studies at the
University of Wisconsin _ Madison, School of Education. Since
1997, Finnigan has worked for SRI International, a non-profit
research institute, as a policy analyst for the U.S. Department
of Education Public Charter Schools Program Evaluation. She
has also worked for the Wisconsin Center for Education Research
at the University of Wisconsin _ Madison. Finnigan will begin
her teaching responsibilities in January 2004.
Kirschenbaum Produces Video
Howard
Kirschenbaum, chair, counseling and human development,
has produced the video "Carl Rogers and the Person-Centered
Approach." The work is described as the most comprehensive
videotape ever produced on the life and work of Carl Rogers,
one of the leading psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists
of our time. The 65-minute presentation contains audio and
video clips of Rogers working with individuals and groups,
and more than 100 photographs and other images. The American
Counseling Association and Insight Media are two of the video's
distributors.
