Gordon Lectures in Poland
Lynn Gordon, associate
professor, educational leadership, participated in an exchange
program with Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, as
part of collaborations made possible through the Skalny Center
for Polish and Central European Studies, a University of Rochester
program. She lectured through June in the Department of American
Studies at Jagiellonian on aspects of women's history in the
United States.
Garland Recognized for 10 Years
of Service
Marty Garland, program
assistant for the Warner Center for Professional Development
and Education Reform, was recognized for 10 years of University
service in June.
Curren Promoted, Named Chair of
Philosophy Department
Randall Curren,
who holds joint appointments in educational leadership and
the College's philosophy department, has been promoted to
professor. He was also appointed chair of the philosophy department.
Wechsler Referenced in Supreme Court Decision
Harold Wechsler
was referenced in Justice Clarence Thomas' dissenting opinion
on Grutter v Bollinger, the University of Michigan Law School
affirmative action case which drew national attention this
summer. The reference was to Wechsler's 1977 book The Qualified
Student (Wiley, John & Sons).
Luehmann Receives Dissertation Award
April Luehmann,
assistant professor, teaching and curriculum, is the recipient
of the 2003 American Association for Teaching and Curriculum
(AATC) Distinguished Dissertation Award in the category of
teaching. The award will be presented to her at the 2003 annual
AATC conference in Baltimore, Md., in October.
Hursh Paper Noted in London Times Review
A paper by David Hursh,
associate professor, teaching and curriculum, was noted in
a London Times article on American education. The paper was
a contribution to the book Discourse, Power and Resistance:
Challenging the Rhetoric of Contemporary Education (Trentham
Books; 2003).
Weaver Elected to School Board
Edwardine Weaver,
RSM, assistant professor, educational leadership, has been
nominated and elected as the vice president (president-elect)
for the Catholic School Board of Monroe County, Diocese of
Rochester. Her term as president will begin in July 2004.
The board formulates policies for the Catholic schools in
Monroe County and works with school-based committees to assure
that actions taken by them are consistent with the policies
promulgated by the Catholic School Board.
Fonzi a Discussant at Virtual Conference
Judith Fonzi, director,
Warner Center for Professional Development and Education Reform,
was a discussant at the Third Virtual Conference on Sustainability
of Local Systemic Change. The conference seeks to bring researchers,
evaluators, and practitioners together in an in-depth dialogue
on the subject of sustainability of systemic reform efforts.
