Curry Presents Papers in UK
Mary Jane Curry,
assistant professor, teaching and curriculum, presented a
paper she co-authored with colleagues from the Open University
in the United Kingdom at the 33rd annual conference
of the Standing Conference on University Teaching and Research
in the Education of Adults. The conference was held in July
at the University of Wales, Bangor. Curry's paper was titled
"Using Telephone Teaching to `Scaffold' Students into
Academic Literacy in the Open University's Openings Programme."
Barton Joins Warner Staff
Doug Barton joins the staff of the Warner School as secretary,
and will be supporting the teaching and curriculum faculty.
Barton previously worked for the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology.
James-Wilson Honored with Betty Pool
Junior Faculty Award
Sonia James-Wilson,
assistant professor, teaching and curriculum, received the
Betty Pool Junior Faculty Award at the May 2003 Warner School
commencement exercises. The award was established to recognize
junior faculty members who have provided outstanding service
to the School and its students. James-Wilson is chairing the
National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)
Assessment Committee and has served as the liaison between
the Warner School and the Eastman School of Music in that
process.
Luehmann Publishes in Science Education
April Luehmann,
assistant professor, teaching and curriculum, co-authored
two papers published in Science Education in July:
"Building Sustainable Science Curriculum: Acknowledging
and Accommodating Local Adaptation"; and "Designed
Curriculum and Local Culture: Acknowledging the Primacy of
Classroom Culture." In addition, Luehmann was presented
the American Association for Teaching and Curriculum 2003
Distinguished Dissertation Award in Baltimore, Md. in October
for her study "Factors Affecting Secondary Science Teachers'
Appraisal and Adoption of Technology-Rich Project Based Learning
Environments."
Santora Makes Nomination
Ellen Santora,
assistant professor, teaching and curriculum, and her colleague
Larry Hudson of the University of Rochester history department
successfully nominated two of their students, teachers Elizabeth
Hoffman and Michael Barker of Fairport's Johanna Perrin Middle
School, for the national Martha Ross Oral History Pre-Collegiate
Teaching Award, made by the Oral History Association. Hoffman
and Barker both attended Warner American History as Dialogue
Summer Institutes. They will receive their award at the Association's
annual meeting and conference.
Gordon Discusses Contemporary Poland
Lynn Gordon,
associate professor, educational leadership, who also holds
a joint appointment with the department of history, co-presented
a seminar on contemporary Poland in October. Through a cooperative
agreement between the University of Rochester and Jagiellonian
University in Krakow, Gordon traveled to Poland last May and
June to lecture and research material for future projects.
Mackie Presents in Geneva, Switzerland
Karen Mackie,
outreach coordinator for counseling, Warner Center for Professional
Development and Education Reform, delivered a paper based
on her dissertation research at a conference co-sponsored
by the International Association for Counselling and the European
Association for Counselling. The conference was held in Geneva,
Switzerland, in April at the United Nations International
Conference Centre. Mackie discussed the ways counselors are
challenged in how they conceive and practice their work during
rapidly changing social and economic times, and the need for
reflection in order to help clients with similar job and career
dislocations and difficulties.
Wischnowski Publishes in Young Exceptional Children
Michael
Wischnowski, assistant professor, educational leadership,
contributed an article to Young Exceptional Children, published
quarterly by the Council for Exceptional Children. "Head
Start and School District Collaborations: Writing an Interagency
Agreement" appeared in the Summer 2003 issue.
