Warner Presents Martin Luther King Jr.
Education Series

MLK Panelists

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the Warner School began a series of events to discuss the issues of education and social justice.

Education and racism was the topic of the first event, a panel discussion that included individuals from educational, political, and community contexts. The panel discussed issues of school segregation, the legacy of the Brown vs. Board of Education decision, and the influence of racism on public education today.

Comprising the panel were Warner graduate students Jennifer Migliore, Derek Seward, and Barbara Latimore- Walker; Bryan Hetherington of the Public Interest Law Office; and Maria Behncke of the Alliance for Quality Education.

The second session in the series, "What Constitutes Research for Social Justice?" provided an opportunity for Warner School faculty to talk about the ways that their work is research for social justice.

"Education and Social Activism," a workshop scheduled for Friday, February 6, will be a hands-on session where members of local, grassroots social justice organizations will share strategies for social action and how they can be translated for educational contexts.

Particular attention will be spent on the activism of beginning teachers, and how they can work with families and community leaders for change in their schools, and on state and national levels.

Sonia James-Wilson, assistant professor, teaching and curriculum and educational leadership, assisted in organizing the series.
