Warner Presents Scandling Lecture Series
 The 2004-05 Scandling Lecture Series begins with Michael Apple, the John Bascom Professor of Curriculum and Instruction and Education Policy Studies at the University of Wisconsin - Madison on Monday, January 24 at 7:00 p.m. in the Great Hall of Rush Rhees Library. Apple, a former elementary and secondary school teacher and past president of a teachers union, has worked with governments, dissident groups, unions, and educators in many countries to democratize educational research policy and practice. He has also written extensively on the relationship between education and power.
In his talk, “Markets, Standards, and Inequality in Education,” Apple will discuss why he believes that educational reform efforts in the United States and elsewhere are dominated by increasingly conservative policies and how the emphasis on marketization and competition, such as voucher plans, and on ever increasing standards and testing are creating more problems than they are solving. He will also discuss alternatives to these reforms that are based in the democratic schools movement and in policies such as the Citizen School and participatory budgeting.
The Scandling Lecture series, named to honor the generosity of William F. Scandling, brings to campus noted researchers, policymakers, and professional educators from throughout the world who contribute their insights and exchange ideas with faculty, students, and alumni at the Warner School, as well as colleagues in the University and the local educational community.
The series will also feature Celia Oyler, associate professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University, on March 2, and Nel Noddings, emerita professor of education at Stanford University, on March 30.
