Balsamo Defends Dissertation
Mark Balsamo has successfully defended his doctoral dissertation “Assessing Principal Practices in a Standards-Based Environment and Examining the Association Between Principal Practices and Student Achievement.” He will earn his Ed.D. in May.
Gabauer Selected to Represent Warner at Public Policy Seminar
Warner doctoral student Colleen Gabauer was selected to represent the Warner School at the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) public policy seminar for advanced graduate studies in Kansas City, Mo. in November 2004. Gabauer is a recruitment coordinator at Purdue University.
The ASHE promotes collaboration among its members and others engaged in the study of higher education through research, conferences, and publications, including the journal The Review of Higher Education.
Jacobs Publishes Article
Doctoral student Gloria Jacobs published the article “Complicating Contexts: Issues of Methodology in Researching the Language and Literacies of Instant Messaging” in the Fourth Quarter 2004 issue of Reading Research Quarterly. Jacobs is an assistant professor of literacy at St. John Fisher College in Rochester.
Poster Session Features Students from Across the
Warner School
Students in ED 506, Doctoral Research Methods, led by Nancy Ares, assistant professor, presented their research proposals to Warner faculty, staff, and students, at a poster session in December.
A variety of research topics and designs were featured, including studies focused on stress in mothers of children with epilepsy, young children’s learning through informal activities with caregivers, retention programs for freshman college students, productive relationships between teachers and disengaged students, anxiety and self-efficacy in adult English language learners, the effects of Professional Development Schools on student achievement, culturally relevant curriculum for elementary social studies, and power and identity construction in classroom activity.
