Larson Authors New Book on Literacy

Joanne Larson, associate professor and chair, co-authored the recently published Making Literacy Real: Theories and Practices for Learning and Teaching (Sage Publications, 2005).

The book, written with Jackie Marsh, University of Sheffield, UK, covers digital literacies, critical literacies, sociocultural-historical theory, implications for teacher education and literacy research, and other literacy topics.

Each chapter examines a theoretical model, accompanied by a discussion of case study material with a leading proponent of the field, including Barbara Comber, Michele Knobel, Colin Lankshear, Barbara Rogoff, and Brian Street. The book includes case studies of Warner doctoral students Lynn Gatto’s and M.R. Maier’s classrooms in the Rochester City School District and Greece Central School District, respectively.
