Spiegel Awarded Scholarship
Counseling and human development doctoral student Lynda Spiegel has been selected as one of only 15 Ross Trust Graduate Scholarship recipients for 2006 by the American Counseling Association. The scholarship is given to counselor education students who are preparing for roles in education and have demonstrated outstanding scholarship and volunteerism.

Bailey Publishes Chapter in Youth Culture Collection
Teaching and curriculum doctoral student Brian Bailey has published “Emo Music and Youth Culture” in Contemporary Youth Culture: An International Encyclopedia (Greenwood Press, 2005). Emo is short for emotional music, and is “characterized by feelings of vulnerablility and a willingness to express heart-felt confessions about adolescence.” Bailey’s research interests include multimodal literacies, video production, and youth’s relationships to popular media and culture.

Khan Publishes Article in American-Muslim Magazine
Shaza Khan, a doctoral student in teaching and curriculum, published “Custom Made: Research Underlines Five Imperatives of Youth Development Programs to Help Young Muslims Confront Societal Challenges and Create Strong and Politive Identities” in the January/February 2006 issue of Islamic Horizons, the leading American-Muslim magazine of North America.

Gkourlias Named District World Languages
Coordinator

Jennifer Gkourlias, a doctoral student in educational leadership, has accepted the position of coordinator of world lanugages for the Greece Central School District, and will be responsible for program development, oversight, and teacher supervision of the languages other than English and English for speakers of other languages programs. Gkourlias previously was the assistant principal at Arcadia Middle School in Greece.

K. Hursh, Hetherington Collaborate on Tutoring Program
Teaching and curriculum doctoral student Kathleen Hursh and Susan Hetherington, assistant professor, are collaborating with the Rochester City School District (RCSD), Encompass: Resources for Learning, and the College to develop a tutoring program for University of Rochester undergraduates working in schools 2, 14, and 17. The program, called CARE (Coaching and Role Modeling for Empowerment) was created as a result of the RCSD call for volunteers from the community.
