Counseling Faculty Present at the American Counseling Association Convention, Publish in VISTAS
Howie Kirschenbaum, professor and chair of the counseling and human development program, presented “Carl Rogers’ Approach to Cross-Cultural Communications, Conflict Resolution, and Peacekeeping” at the 2006 American Counseling Association (ACA) Convention in Montreal in April.
And Kathryn Douthit, assistant professor, presented “Dementia Prevention across the Lifespan: An Emerging Role for Counselors.”
Douthit, along with Douglas Guiffrida, assistant professor, also published articles in VISTAS, the ACA annual peer-review publication. Douthit wrote “Dementia Prevention across the Lifespan: An Emerging Role for Counselors” and Guiffrida wrote “Preparing and Supporting African American College Students.”
Uebbing Presents at Conferences
Steve Uebbing, adjunct faculty, presented “The Relationship between the Superintendent and the Board of Education” at the New York State Council of School Superintendent’s Aspiring Superintendents Workshop in April in Rochester. In addition, Uebbing presented the keynote address “Character Education that Works” at the Values Realization Institute Conference in Canandaigua in May.
Erickson Joins Editorial Board
Deborah Erickson, professor and director of academic programs and student services, has been selected to join the editorial board of the Counselor Education and Supervision Journal for a three-year term.
Choppin Presents at Math Conference
Jeffrey Choppin, assistant professor, presented “Difficulties with Scaling Up Reform: A Situated View of the Challenges of Transforming Classroom Discourse,” and “Teaching as Design: Implications for the Role of Curriculum and Student Participation” at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting in April in St. Louis.
Curry Publishes Book Chapter
Mary Jane Curry, assistant professor, published the chapter “Skills, Access, and Basic Writing: A Community College Case Study from the United States,” in Teaching Academic Writing in UK Higher Education: Theories, Practices, and Models (London: Palgrave Macmillan, 2006) by L. Ganobscik-Williams. In addition, Curry spent three weeks at the Open University in the United Kingdom as a visiting research fellow in April.
Van Geel Presents Workshop at German Conference
Tyll van Geel, professor and chair of the educational leadership program, presented the paper “Educational Justice as Legal Issue” at the Annual Congress of the German Society for Educational Research at Goethe-University of Frankfurt in Germany in March.
Lewis Serves as National Judge, Gives Presentation
Aimee Lewis, assistant director for communications, served as a judge for the national Public Relations Society of America Bronze Anvil awards for national media relations campaigns. She also presented “Writing for the Web” in April to the Rochester Chapter of Women in Communications.
Hursh Publishes Book Chapter, Keynotes at Conference
David Hursh, associate professor, published the chapter “Carry It On: Fighting for Progressive Education in Neoliberal Times” in Education Research in the Public Interest: Social Justice, Action, and Policy (Teachers College Press, 2006) by Gloria Ladson-Billings and William F. Tate.
Hursh also presented “High-stakes Testing and the Decline of Learning” at the annual Secondary School Issues Conference at the University of Rochester in May.
Santora Publishes Journal Article
Ellen Santora, assistant professor, published the article “Narrating Democratic Education” in the Spring 2006 issue of Social Studies Research and Practice.
Ares Publishes Article
Nancy Ares, assistant professor, published the article “Political Aims and Classroom Dynamics: Generative Processes in Classroom Communities” in volume 8, number 2 of the journal, Radical Pedagogy.
Jefferson Receives Pioneer Award
Frederick Jefferson, professor emeritus, was a 2006 recipient of the Pioneer Award from the Black Heritage Committee of the City of Rochester. The award honors African Americans who, through their efforts, have blazed a trail and opened doors for other members of the community.
O’Connor, Perhamus, Seward Co-Author Paper
Doctoral students Lisa Perhamus and Derek Seward, along with Kevin O’Connor, assistant professor, co-authored the paper “‘Sponsorship’ and the Social Production of Engineers,” which was presented at the 2006 New England American Society for Engineering Education Conference in Worcester, Mass. in March. The paper will be published in the conference proceedings.
Brian Bailey Accepts
Appointment at Yale
Warner doctoral student and adjunct faculty Brian Bailey has accepted an appointment at Yale University as assistant director of the teacher preparation and education studies program.
In addition to course instruction, Bailey will provide leadership in urban education studies and the partnership with New Haven Public Schools. He will also take a lead role in research associated with the urban graduate program.
