Finnigan Participates in Brookings Conference
Kara Finnigan, assistant professor, was invited to participate in the “Charter School Outcomes Research Conference” at the Brookings Institute in Washington D.C. to engage in a discussion regarding the status and future of charter school outcomes research and the implications of this research for policy.
Guiffrida Publishes Article, Appointed to Editorial Board
Doug Guiffrida, assistant professor, published the article “Toward a Cultural Advancement of Tinto’s Theory” in the volume 29, issue 4 of The Review of Higher
Education. In addition, Guiffrida was appointed to the Editorial Advisory Board of the American Counseling Association.
Hetherington Named to Committee on
Community Literacy
Susan Hetherington, assistant professor, has been named to Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Community Literacy. The appointment complements Hetherington’s work with the Rochester City School District’s Literacy Initiative and with the community service organization, EnCompass.
Counseling Faculty Receive Licensure
Deborah Erickson, professor and chair of counseling and human development, and director of academic programs and student services; along with Assistant Professors Kathryn Douthit, Doug Guiffrida, Andre Marquis, and Karen Mackie have recently earned the New York State Licensure for Mental Health Practitioners. Because the state now requires mental health practitioners to be licensed, it was important that all University faculty attain the license in order to supervise students planning to become mental health counselors.
Van Geel Publishes Review Essay
Tyll van Geel, professor, published the essay “Science, Intelligent Design, and the Constitution,” a review of the book Does God Belong in Public Schools? (Kent Greenawalt) in the August edition of the American Journal of Education.
Hursh Honored at East High, Publishes Articles
David Hursh, associate professor, was honored at the 10th anniversary of the Teaching and Learning Institute in June. Hursh was named one of the three most instrumental in initiating and nurturing the East High School magnate program.
Hursh also recently published “The Crisis in Urban Education: Resisting Neoliberal Policies and Forging Democratic Possibilities,” a review of High Stakes Education: Inequality, Globalization and Urban School Reform (Pauline Lipman) and Radical Possibilities: Public Policy, Urban Education and a New Social Movement (Jean Anyon), appeared in the May issue of Educational Researcher.
In addition, Hursh cowrote the chapter “The Possibilities and Limits of Managerialist School Reform: The Case of Target-Setting,” in Education, Globalization, and Social Change (Oxford University Press).
