ScienceStart! Kids Come "Over the Bridge"

Warner master’s student and St. Monica School Pre-K teacher Kristina Kozlowski brought her students from the School’s summer program “Over the Bridge” to the River Campus for a day of fun and learning in August. The program at the school, located on Genesee St. in Rochester, is supported by a Science Start! Early Reading First grant.

Kozlowski, along with other ScienceStart! staff including Dianne Crowley and Joanne Pagano, used campus features to teach the students a number of concepts, including color and light (the stained glass chapel windows), movement and machines (the parking meters and construction vehicles), and mapping and measuring (jumping distances at the racing track).

ScienceStart! capitalizes on children’s natural curiosity about the world around them, and uses science as a vehicle to develop language, literacy, and school readiness skills among preschoolers. The principal investigator of the project is Lucia French, professor.
