Erickson Co-Authors Article
Deb Erickson, professor, chair of counseling and human development, and director of academic programs and student services, co-authored the article “The Development and Validation of the Health Proneness Questionnaire,” which appeared in the December issue of Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings. Five scholars from three different countries collaborated on the article featuring a series of studies describing the development, validation, and potential use of the Heath Proneness Questionnaire (HPQ). The HPQ is a newly developed scale that allows practitioners to quickly screen psychological characteristics related to health and a patient’s perception of quality of life.
Stein Presents in Texas
Paul Stein, assistant professor, presented “Participatory Action Research and Culture Change in Elder Settings” at the Gerontological Society of America Conference in Dallas, Texas. His paper reviewed ‘unruly research’ as a basis of sociogenesis that results in enabling collective capacities for care.
Hursh Publishes Chapter
David Hursh, associate professor, published “Marketing Education: The Rise of Standardized Testing, Accountability, Competition and Markets in Public Education” in Neoliberalism and Education Reform, edited by E. Wayne Ross and Rich Gibson. The book is a critique of educational reforms that resulted from the rise of neoliberalism, and provides alternatives to neoliberal conceptions of education problems and solutions. Hursh’s chapter provides an overview of education politics over the last two decades and how neoliberal polices have led to the current emphasis on high-stakes standardized testing and accountability. He also criticizes the recent education reforms in New York State and at the federal level under the No Child Left Behind Act.
Curry Publishes Articles, Presents in Spain
Mary Jane Curry, assistant professor, published “The Dominance of English in Global Scholarly Publishing: Implications for Scholars, Institutions, and Academia” in International Higher Education and “Reframing Notions of Competence in Scholarly Writing: From Individual to Networked Activity” in the Revista Canaria de Estudios Ingleses special issue, “Publishing in English in a Global Context,” with research partner, Theresa Lillis. Curry and Lillis teamed up again to present “English-Medium Academic Production in a Global Context: Multilingual Scholars Managing Available Resources” at a conference, “Publishing and Presenting Research Internationally: Issues for Speakers of English as an Additional Language,” in Tenerife, Spain.
