Teaching Reading-Thinking Strategies Through
Literature Study in Grades 1-5
A workshop focused on the methods used to teach reading
strategies will be offered by the Warner Center for Professional
Development and Education Reform of the Margaret Warner Graduate
School of Education and Human Development. The workshop, designed
for grade 1-5 teachers, will be held Thursdays, March 4, 11,
and 18, from 4:00-6:00 p.m., at Twelve Corners Middle School
in Brighton.
Joy Moss, literature specialist at the Harley Lower School
and adjunct associate professor at Warner, will lead the sessions.
Participants will be invited to explore ways to teach the
reading-thinking strategies used by all skilled readers to
generate meaning and to interpret increasingly complex and
challenging texts.
Throughout the workshop, special emphasis will be placed
on the selection of literature that invites reader engagement
and fosters lively discussion. Examples of literary experiences
will be used to promote reading and expand personal reading
interests.
The fee for the workshop is $60 and continuing education
credits (CEUs) are available to all participants. The registration
