Wednesday Lunch Hour - Issues Surrounding Homophobic Bullying

Facilitated by BJ Douglass
November 11, 2009
12-12:50 p.m.
Dewey B-315

The research is clear that homophobic bullying has significant effects on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) students – as well as those students perceived to be so. Four out of five of these students have reported being physically, sexually, or verbally harassed at school and the effects of this bullying include truancy, mental health issues, poor academic success, and can lead to alcohol/drug abuse and suicide.  At this luncheon BJ Douglass will discuss some of the issues of homophobic bullying and the need to expand current anti-bullying curriculum to include homophobia and sexual minority students’ issues.
