Bruce Kimball, professor in educational leadership, was presented
with the National Education Association 2004 Art of Teaching
Essay Prize for an essay describing the teaching career and
innovations of C. C. Langdell, who served as dean of the Harvard
Law School from 1870 to 1895.
Kimball also recently delivered the inaugural address at the
installation of the Phi Beta Kappa chapter at Texas A&M
University. His title for the event, attended by former President
George Bush, was: “In Defense of Liberal Education,
Now Under Siege by the Disciplinarians, Technologists, Outcomers,
Bottom-liners, and Marketeers.”
Kimball is a leading authority on the concept and history
of liberal education. He has lectured widely, published several
articles, and authored several books, including the prize-winning
Orators and Philosophers: A History of the Idea of Liberal
Education (Teachers College Press, 1986, 1995), and The True
Professional Ideal in America (Blackwell, 1992, 1995).
At Warner, Kimball teaches courses on the history of professional
education, student affairs, leadership, and curriculum in
