John Barker, a Warner School doctoral student
in educational leadership, who works for the University’s
McNair Program, has been lobbying in Washington for
the reappropriation of a program that supports low-income
undergraduate students aiming for doctoral degrees in
the sciences. Barker is writing his dissertation on
this topic.
Jason Dauenhauer, a doctoral student in counseling
and human development, received the Rochester Academy
of Medicine’s 2002 Geriatrics Award for his paper
“Late Life Depression.” Dauenhauer summarized
his research in a poster session held during the Academy’s
annual meeting. He and four colleagues wrote an article
“Challenges Associated with Providing Physical
Therapy for Elderly People: Implications for Graduate
Education,” which appeared in the Spring 2002
issue of the Journal of Physical Therapy Education.
Marie Fetzner, a doctoral student in leadership
and policy, has been elected to the national board of
the American Association for Women in Community Colleges
(AAWCC) as the Region II Director for 2002–2004.
Fetzner was also a copresenter at the Association for
Institutional Research Annual Forum in Toronto in June
2002. Her topic was “Success in Cyberspace: Student
Retention in Online Courses.”
Shira May Peterson, a Scandling Scholar, has
received a 2003 Spencer Dissertation Fellowship for
Research Related to Education to write on the subject
of science explorations in preschool classrooms. Only
6 percent of those who apply are granted these awards,
expected to contribute to the history, theory, or practice
of education. Last year Peterson was awarded an American
Educational Research Association/Spencer Pre-Dissertation
Fellowship to travel to three national
education events.
Marjorie Hodges Shaw, a doctoral student in
educational leadership, delivered a presentation, “Making
Soup without Stock: Legal, Ethical, and Social Issues
Affecting Technology Decisions in Higher Education,”
in The Hague, Netherlands, on
November 5, 2002, at the SURF Education Days 2002 conference
of administrators in higher education. Shaw’s
talk was about law and ethics in the administration
of information technology in an educational environment.
Bethany Welch, an M.S. student in educational
leadership, is heavily involved in community projects
involved in the national movement toward service learning
as a component of higher education.
