James-Wilson, Gordon Take Part in Frederick Douglass Events

Sonia James-Wilson, assistant professor, teaching and curriculum, and Lynn Gordon, associate professor, educational leadership, took part in a three-day program developing the theme of "The Public Life and Work of Frederick Douglass." The Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African-American studies organized the programs, which ran from March 27 - 29.

James-Wilson presented Symbol and Icon: Frederick Douglass, the Underground Railroad and the NYS
Elementary Social Studies Curriculum. Gordon was chair of the Douglass at Home and Abroad session.

Guest speakers at the event included former Surgeon General David Satcher, and historian David W. Blight, an expert on Douglass and one of the nation's foremost authorities on the Civil War and its legacy.

A companion conference will be held at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in September.
