Scholar Brian Street Visits Warner, Speaks on Literacy and Numeracy

Brian Street, an internationally known literacy scholar, visited the Warner School in March for a week-long series of events, including a colloquium on his recent research on literacy and numeracy as social practice. Joanne Larson, associate professor and chair of teaching and curriculum, coordinated his visit.

Street is a professor of language at King's College, London University, and visiting professor of education in the Graduate School of Education, University of Pennsylvania. He has written and lectured extensively on literacy practices from both a theoretical and an applied perspective.

In addition to the colloquium, Street also gave a presentation to teachers and administrators in Greece and toured the BUBL project at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. He also visited doctoral student Maryrita Maier's first-grade classroom.

Street is currently involved in research projects on home/school literacy and numeracy practices. He has co-authored the forthcoming Numeracy Practices at Home and at School, to be published by Kluwer.
