Projections of Education Statistics to 2012, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES):

  • Public elementary and secondary enrollment is projected to increase 9 percent in the West and 1 percent in the South. Over the same period, in the Northeast and Midwest, enrollment is projected to decrease 5 and 4 percent, respectively.
  • Enrollment in degree-granting postsecondary institutions is projected to increase from 15.3 million in 2000 to 17.7 million, an increase of 15 percent.
  • Graduates from public and private high schools are projected to increase from 2.8 million to 3.1 million, an increase of 9 percent.
  • The number of bachelor's degrees is expected to increase from 1,237,875 in 1999-2000 to 1,437,000, an increase of 16 percent.
