Educators Publish NSF Mongraph
Raffaella Borasi, dean of the Warner School and Judith Fonzi,
director of the Warner Center for Professional Development and Education
Reform, published a National Science Foundation monograph, "Professional
Development Practices that Support School Mathematics Reform," which
will be distributed to all the school districts in the United States.

Featured in Education Week
The science-based preschool curriculum, developed by associate professor
Lucia French, was featured in the May 1, 2002 issue of Education Week.
The article, titled "The Little Scientists," is available in
the archives at www.educationweek.org. In addition, Lucia and Kathy Conezio,
project director for the ScienceStart!® grants, published the cover
story, "Science in the Preschool Classroom: Capitalizing on Children's
Fascination with the Everyday World to Foster Language and Literacy Development,"
in the September 2002 issue of Young Children, the magazine of the National
Association for the Education of Young Children, available on-line at
www.naeyc.org/resources/journal/beyond.asp.

Two Warner staff members have been recognized for special service anniversaries:
Martha Dobson, Warner school administrator, celebrated her 10th anniversary.
Lisa Schojan, project assistant to the dean, has been at the University
for 15 years. Thank you for your contributions to the Warner School, Martha
and Lisa.

Kirschenbaum
on Carl Rogers
Howard Kirschenbaum, chair of counseling and human development, delivered
keynote presentations on the life and works of Carl Rogers at the World
Congress on Psychotherapy in Vienna, Austria, and at the Carl Rogers Symposium
in California this summer. As a well-known international expert on Carl
Rogers, Howie was quoted in the June 2002 issue of Counseling Today, a
publication of the American Counseling Association, discussing Rogers'
role in the history of counseling.

Speaks on Psychopathology
Jerry Rubenstein, associate professor, counseling and human development,
delivered a paper "Windows on Your Whirled: The Paradoxical Role
of Vulnerability in Pathology" in June 2002 at the Adult Psychopathology
Institute, University of Southern Maine.

Leave Continues
Philip Wexler, the Michael Scandling Professor of Education and former
dean of the Warner School, remains on leave from the University in 2002-03.
He remains in Israel with his family and has an appointment at Hebrew
University.

New
Science Educator Joins Faculty
Joining us following a stint as visiting assistant professor at Indiana
University, April Luehmann earned two master's degrees--one in Industrial
and Operations Engineering and the other in Science Education--and
a doctorate in those fields, from the University of Michigan at Ann
Arbor. Her research interests include the development of innovative
teacher education programs, the adoption of technology-rich learning
environments for K-12 science teachers, and the investigation of adolescent
girls' scientific understandings in alternative learning environments.

Jefferson
Appointed Professor Emeritus
Frederick Jefferson, former Director of the Urban Schools Institute and
Warner School faculty member, was appointed professor emeritus of education
in the Warner School. The appointment, approved by the University's Board
of Trustees in April 2002, took effect July 1, and is in addition to Fred's
role as University intercessor.

Curren
to Edit Educational Philosophy Journal
Randall Curren, associate professor of education and of philosophy, has
been named co-editor of Theory and Research in Education, a new journal
of educational philosophy and theory. The first issue is scheduled to
appear in March 2003 from Sage Publications, an international academic
publisher based in Great Britain.Theory and Research in Education will
be published three times a year. Curren will co-edit the journal with
Harry Brighouse, professor of philosophy at the University of Wisconsin
at Madison. Two University of Rochester faculty will serve on the editorial
board: Tyll van Geel, the Earl B. Taylor Professor and chair of the educational
leadership program at the Warner School, and Robert Westbrook, professor
of history.
