I. Entry-Level Courses
(36 credits)

Entry-level/ advanced coursework in counseling that cover all of the following areas:

  • Counseling theory
  • Counseling practice
  • Legal, ethical and professional issues in counseling
  • Career counseling and development
  • Group counseling, group work and group dynamics
  • Multi-cultural perspectives in counseling
  • Contemporary issues in school counseling (if specializing in school counseling)
  • Addictions counseling and prevention (if specializing in community counseling)
  • Assessment, appraisal, diagnosis
  • Supervised practicum in counseling
  • 600-hour supervised counseling internship

II. Research Methods Courses
(9 credits)

ED 506 Concepts and Issues in Social Science Research

Choose two of the following additional research methods courses:

Students also need to register each semester of their first two years in a non-credit bearing “cohort seminar” intended to support their progress in the program (ED 561 Counseling and Human Development Cohort Seminar).

IV. Internships
(6 credits)

EDF 559 Supervised Internship in Counselor Education I or II
EDF 560 Supervised Internship in Counselor Education III

V. Dissertation Research
(18 credits)

ED 563 Counseling & Human Development Proposal Seminar
ED 564 Counseling & Human Development Dissertation Seminar I
ED 565 Counseling & Human Development Dissertation Seminar II

A total of at least 9 credits of dissertation credits, to be taken concurrently with the Proposal Seminar (3 credit), the Dissertation Seminar I (3 credits) and the Dissertation Seminar II (3 credits)

VI. Additional Requirements/Milestones

  • Successful completion of a Portfolio evaluation (in fall of year 2)
  • Successful completion of a Comprehensive Exam (spring of year 2)
  • Successful completion and defense of a Field-based Dissertation (year 3)

NOTE: Students need to have completed their comprehensive exam in order to register for the Proposal Seminar. Students need to have successfully completed the Proposal Seminar in order to register for one of the Dissertation Seminars. Once in the Dissertation Seminar sequence, students are expected to register for both Seminars in the same academic year and to keep up with the assignments in order to complete their action research dissertation within the required year. Failure to complete the action research dissertation within the allotted year will have to be considered on a case by case basis.
