This 48-credit-hour CACREP accredited program meets all current
New York State Education Department requirements for provisional
certification as a school counselor. When you complete this
program you will be eligible to apply for the National Board
of Certified Counselors (NBCC) Board Eligible status as a
National Certified Counselor (NCC). This program has "Approved"
status by the New York State Education Department for provisional
certification as a school counselor. Applicants for provisional
certification must complete a workshop on recognizing the
signs of child abuse.
The Certificate of Qualification (CQ) and the Provisional
Certificate are valid for employment as an elementary or secondary
school counselor. If you are newly certified and are not employed
full time in a school, or if you do not have an offer of full-time
employment in a school, you will be issued the CQ. The CQ
is valid for five years, during which time you may take coursework
to be applied toward permanent certification. Holders of the
CQ may substitute in schools until a permanent job is secured.
When you accept a regular position in a school, the CQ must
be exchanged for the Provisional Certificate. You then have
five additional years in which to complete the requirements
for permanent certification, including the earning of 12 more
graduate credits, bringing the total to 60 graduate credits.
If, however, the initial five-year period elapses and you
have not secured a counseling position, the CQ must be exchanged
for a Provisional Certificate. Then, five additional years
remain in which to obtain permanent certification.
New York State has certification reciprocity with many other
states. If you wish to obtain certification in other states,
you should contact the state education department of the state
in which you will seek employment.
UR Undergraduates may pursue an M.S.
