Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education Accelerated Option (ISIS code: HE9)
Admission requirements and expectations include:
- Acceptance into the Ed.D. in Higher Education
- Approved transfer of 36 credits of prior graduate coursework (see Frequently asked questions about transfer credits)
- Documented professional experience in the same field of specialization
- Holding a professional job that can give access to a research site for the dissertation
- Career goals that are consistent to what the accelerated program prepares for (that is, advancing and taking leadership responsibilities in one’s current career and/or in the preparation of practitioners in the same area of specialization – not preparing for an academic career)
- Capacity and commitment to sustain the program’s intense pace

How can I figure out which of my previous coursework can be transferred?
After reading this FAQ you should have a good sense of which of your previous courses could be transferred. If you wish, you can request an appointment with an Admission Counselor to go through your transcripts together. However, a final determination of which credits will be transferred or not will be made only at the time of your admission – as the ultimate decision will depend on a full evaluation of your situation, and approval of your advisor, program chair and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies needs to be secured.
Do grades matter?
Only graduate courses with a grade of B or higher can be transferred.
Under what conditions can I transfer coursework taken more than 10 years ago?
To ensure that the knowledge gain from previous courses is still relevant, it is a common practice at this University that transfer credit is granted for relevant coursework taken within the last 10 years. However, exceptions to this rule can be made if you can provide convincing evidence that you have remained up to date regarding the content of the courses that you are requesting to transfer – for example, because you have participated more recently in conferences or professional development on the same topic, or you are teaching in that same area.
Will credits taken in subjects other than higher education count?
Courses taken in areas other than higher education will usually be transferable IF they are relevant to the program that you are being admitted to. For example, courses in administration and leadership, even if not specific to education, will usually be considered relevant for any student who wants to prepare for leadership positions in his/her field. In contrast, it is not likely that courses, for example, in yoga or music appreciation will count – unless you can made a good argument regarding their relevance to your specific program.
Will credits from internships count?
Credits earned by participating in internships that are relevant to the field you are specializing in are usually approved for transfer – although exceptions may apply.
Will credits from MS thesis count?
Credits earned by working on a Masters’ thesis are usually approved for transfer, as such experiences are very valuable to prepare you for the dissertation.
What happens if less than 36 transfer credits are approved?
If only some of your previous coursework – but not the full 36 credits – can be transferred, you should talk with your advisor about your options. Usually, this simply means that you will need to take additional courses for additional credit hours.
