Educational Leadership Doctoral Degrees


Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Administration with New York State School Building Leader Certification (ISIS code: AB6/AD6/AM6)

This program is designed for people who wish to pursue the study of various aspects of educational administration at the doctoral level and who have not yet obtained NYS certification as school building and/or school district leader. The program can be pursued either as a full-time or part-time student and it has no residency requirements. A number of different option to complete the dissertation are available.

Requirements

I. Entry-level Courses
(Up to 36 credits)

Entry-level or advanced coursework in education or related fields; some or all of these courses can be transferred into the program from previous graduate work.

II. Research Methods Courses
(9 credits)

ED 506 Concepts and Issues in Social Science Research (formerly titled Doctoral Research Methods)

Choose two additional research methods courses from the following:
ED 504 Quantitative Research Methods I
ED 507 Qualitative Research Methods
ED 520 Program Evaluation

III. Program Core
(15 credits)

Five advanced courses in educational leadership.

IV. Required Courses for NYS Certification
(18 credits)

ED 462 Managing School Resources
ED 465 School Governance and the Rights of Students and Teachers
EDU 502 Leading the School District: The Superintendency in the 21st Century
ED 469 Leadership and Organizational Dynamics
EDU 407 Curricular and Instructional Leadership
EDU 421 Human Resource Management
EDU 468 Data-Driven School Improvement

NOTE: Substitution of one of these courses may be possible with permission of advisor. Candidates seeking only building level certification will not need to take EDU 502; candidates seeking only district-level certification will not need to take ED 469.

V. Electives

Choose electives as needed to reach a minimum of 90 credits; some advanced research methods courses are recommended.

VI. Administrative Internship (ED 498)
(6 credits)

The internship must be for a total of 15 weeks full time or equivalent, although it can take place over more than one semester. Learn more about the administrative internship.

VII. Dissertation Research
(9-15 credits)

ED 593 Ed.D. Dissertation Research (at least 9 credits recommended)
ED 591 Independent Study (optional)

Note: Students may register for ED 593 only after the comprehensive exam.
