I. Entry-Level Courses
(36 credits)

Entry-level/advanced coursework in education or related fields to be transferred in or completed prior to entering the program cohort

II. Research Methods Courses
(9 credits)

ED 506 Concepts and Issues in Social Science Research

Choose two additional research methods courses for a total of 6 credits; eligible courses include:
ED 507 Qualitative Research Methods
ED 504 Quantitative Research Methods
ED 520 Program Evaluation

III. Program Core
(18 credits)

EDU 525 Theory and Research in Teaching and Learning
EDU 526 Theory and Research in Curriculum and Change
ED 513 Academic Writing for Educators

In consultation with your advisor, select three courses to develop depth in your area of specialization. Advanced seminars offered in various areas of teaching and curriculum (i.e., ED 588, EDU 527, EDU 528, EDU 529) are especially recommended and can be taken more than once if offered by different instructors.

Students also need to register each semester of their first two years in a non-credit bearing “cohort seminar” intended to support their progress in the program (ED 551 Teaching & Curriculum Cohort Seminar).

V. Dissertation Research
(18 credits)

ED 532 Action Research (1 credit)
ED 553 Teaching & Curriculum Proposal Seminar (2 credits)
ED 554 Action Research Dissertation Seminar I (3 credits)
ED 555 Action Research Dissertation Seminar II (3 credits)

A total of at least 9 credits of dissertation credits, to be taken concurrently with the Proposal Seminar (3 credits), the Dissertation Seminar I (3 credits), and the Dissertation Seminar II (3 credits).

VI. Additional Requirements/Milestones:

NOTE: Students need to have completed their comprehensive exam in order to register for the Proposal Seminar. Students need to have successfully completed the Proposal Seminar in order to register for one of the Dissertation Seminars. Once in the Dissertation Seminar sequence, students are expected to register for both Seminars in the same academic year and to keep up with the assignments in order to complete their action research dissertation within the required year. Failure to complete the action research dissertation within the allotted year will have to be considered on a case by case basis.
