Entry-level Teacher Preparation Programs

Programs to Obtain NYS Certification in Teaching Literacy (Reading)

The New York State Education Department has determined that certification in Teaching Literacy (at either birth-grade 6 or grades 5-12) can be pursued only by teachers who already have NYS Initial Certification in an other area of specialization.

Therefore, if you are a prospective teacher interested in Teaching Literacy, you need to select another specialty as your primary area while also planning to pursue certification in Teaching Literacy as a non-degree Advanced Certificate program – either after you complete your entry-level teacher preparation program, or concurrently with it.

To learn more about our programs in Teaching Literacy, see Programs for Teachers Seeking Additional Certification in Literacy/Reading.

You can also check out the programs of study corresponding to our most popular options by selecting from the following list:

1. For students interested in Teaching Literacy (birth-grade 6):

2. For students interested in Teaching Literacy (grades 5-12):

3. For students interested in Teaching Literacy (birth-grade 6) + Teaching Students with Disabilities:
