New Research Methods Requirement (doctoral students)
After an in depth study of Warner's research methods courses, the following were instituted:
- New research methods courses added
- New title and focus for ED 506, making it a prerequisite for all doctoral-level research methods courses
- Additional prerequisites now required
- Recommended sequencing for courses
- Changes to course offerings to accommodate the recommended sequencing
The prerequisite requirements are effective immediately. Other requirements are effective for students admitted after January 2005. For more information, see:
New Doctoral Portfolio Evaluation
The portfolio evaluation is the first milestone common to all doctoral students. Important changes in the process affect all doctoral students and include:
- The evaluation now takes place in September (instead of May)
- Students are now required to take the first doctoral research methods course and a department core course (rather than two school-wide courses)
For more information, as well as transition plans for students admitted prior to January 2004, see Doctoral Portfolio Evaluation.
New Specializations in Human Development Masters’ Programs
People enrolled in the M.S. in Human Development now can choose among a number of new specializations that have been created within that program. You can learn more about these new specializations by clicking on the following links:
This change will not affect current students with approved programs of studies. However, current students who desire to do so are eligible to switch to one of the new specializations – provided that they still have enough room in their program of study to include the courses required by that specialization. If interested in this option, discuss your situation with your advisor.
Counseling Programs and New NYS Licensure
New York State has recently instituted a new licensure for Mental Health Counselors. The Warner School has responded by designing some specializations within their current Masters and doctoral programs in counseling that could better prepare students interested in applying independently for the new licensure. To learn more about these new options, check:
If you are interested in taking advantage of the new opportunities these programs offer, discuss your situation with your advisor.
Changes in Higher Education Programs
As a result of a self-study conducted over the last year, a number of innovations have been introduced in our Masters and doctoral programs in Higher Education. Among these innovations are revised course requirements, the development of a few new applied courses – some of which will be offered for the first time in Fall 2005 or Spring 2006 – and a more predictable sequence of course offerings. To learn more about these changes and whether you could take advantage of the new opportunities they offer, check the updated information available on each of the following programs on our website, and then seek your advisor:
