Professional Reflection Sessions
Participants will attend one from 10:00-11:00 (A-C) and

A. “Do Right By Kids”: Recognizing and Reporting Suspected Cases of Child Abuse and Neglect
In Monroe County, the Child Protective Services Hotline receives an average of 12,000 calls each year from mandated reporters and concerned citizens with suspicions of child abuse or neglect. More than half of these calls cannot be registered and investigated, resulting in frustration for both the caller and the Hotline staff. Frequently, callers are unfamiliar with the criteria used to register calls and the ways in which state law authorized CPS to act. This presentation will offer an overview of the Do Right By Kids Web site—www.dorightbykids.org–a user-friendly tool for mandated reporters of child and neglect, and will outline opportunities for Web-based training. Developed by the same collaboration of health, social services and communications professionals that created Not Me, Not Now and GottaQuit.com, the Web site gives users insight as to how to work together with CPS and other agencies to make children safer.

Presenter: Bobbi McCaffery, Trainer, the Center for Health and Behavioral Training.

B. Effective Community Partnerships to Assist Counselors With Students Who are Members of Gangs
As professionals we have an obligation to maintain a safe and equitable learning environment for all students, especially minorities who are the largest population in the Juvenile Justice System. This training is designed to identify and implement prevention and intervention strategies to assist counselors with students who are members of gangs, as well as highlight effective community partnerships. One of the most important relationships formed is between school counselors and community counselors. During the workshop, the presenter will show correlations between the Juvenile Justice System, Educational Systems, and the gang culture in these communities.

Presenter:Damon Garfield, Executive Director, Agency Team ROC

C. Kids’ On-line World: the Impact of the Internet and the Development of Communication Skills and Relationships
Through an interactive program, this session will discuss specific concerns school counselors have about technology’s impact on children’s communication skills, including chat rooms, e-mail and instant messaging. The workshop includes guidelines for parents and provides a “tool bag” for working with parents.

Presenter:Thomas Hernandez, Assistant Professor, Counselor Education Department SUNY College at Brockport

D. Connecting Counselors to the Classroom: Crosswalking the National Counseling Standards with the New York State Learning Standards
This program will provide attendees with the framework to align the National Counseling Standards with the NYS Learning Standards. Using K-12 application examples, participants will become familiar with the Crosswalk component of the NYS Comprehensive School Counseling Model and learn how to utilize the Crosswalk to gain access to the classroom via the counseling curriculum.

Presenter:David Ford, High School Counselor, Queensbury, NY; Vice President High School, NYSSCA

E. Introduction to Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
This is a basic introduction to Dialectical Behavior Therapy, pioneered by Marsha Linehan. There is growing interest in DBT as an effective treatment approach for a variety of individuals, including youth. This presentation will give participants a beginning understanding of the therapeutic model, which combines cognitive-behavioral interventions with Eastern mindfulness practices. Instructors will weave case examples and videotapes demonstrating interventions into the presentation.
