Women Composers in the Spotlight

The music of female composers was in the spotlight last spring as the Eastman School presented its first Women in Music Festival.

The four-day event, coordinated by assistant professor of chamber music Sylvie Beaudette and graduate student Sophia Ahmad, featured Eastman students and faculty performing lunchtime concerts of women's compositions and a special exhibit at the Sibley Music Library highlighting achievements of women in music.

"This festival is a celebration of women involved in all aspects of music—including composition, performance, and scholarship," says Beaudette.

The festival featured works by such noted composers as Roxanna Panufnik, Clara Schumann, Joan Tower, Amy Beach, and Libby Larsen, as well as new music composed by female Eastman students.
