‘Pure Light’ Technology Saves Energy
Computer screens and cell phone displays are about to get more energy efficient: University researchers have patented glassy liquid crystals, a new class of optical materials that efficiently create "pure polarized light," which uses far less energy than conventional flat-panel displays to produce the same images.
Developed by a team led by Shaw Chen, professor of chemical engineering and materials science and senior scientist at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, the technology emits color polarized light-the kind necessary for 3-D and other striking images-based on liquid crystal technology.
The technology has been licensed to Cornerstone Research Group.
