Student Awards

In the past year, many students were honored for their exceptional academic performance. Several are noted below; for a complete list, visit www.rochester.edu/president/memos/2006/awards_announcement.html.

Maria Florencia Canelli ’04 (PhD) received the 2005 Mitsuyoshi Tanaka Dissertation Award in Experimental Particle Physics from the American Physical Society.

Stephen Privitera ’07 and Elise Peterson ’07 were named Goldwater Scholars, a national award given to outstanding undergraduate students who plan to pursue careers in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering. Privitera, a mathematics and physics major, intends to pursue a doctoral degree in applied mathematics or theoretical physics. Peterson, a molecular genetics and history major, plans to complete a doctoral degree in genetics.

David Eisenstat ’07, a computer science major, received the 2006 Outstanding Undergraduate Award from the Computing Research Association.

Three undergraduates received Fulbright Fellowships to study abroad for the 2006–07 year. Elizabeth Shaw ’06, a Spanish major, planned to study and teach in Argentina. Take Five Scholar Michael Newmark ’06, a history major, planned to study in Krakow. Anna Blum ’06, a double major in brain and cognitive sciences and German, planned to study in Freiburg, Germany.

The National Science Foundation awarded Patricia McHale ’06, a mechanical engineering major, a graduate research fellowship, a national award given to outstanding students in the natural sciences, selected social sciences, mathematics, and engineering that provides support for three years of research-based graduate study.
