C-Print Captioning Service

C-Print is a computer-aided speech-to-print captioning service. This technology is used to improve the classroom experience for deaf and hard of hearing students. C-Print service is available through the University Disability Coordinator's Office.

The C-Print captionist provides speech-to-print service through the use of two laptop computers connected by a cable. The captionist sits near the student and types classroom lectures and interactions into one laptop computer. The typed information is simultaneously displayed on a second laptop computer for the deaf and/or hard of hearing student to read during the class. The student has the ability to communicate to the captionist through the laptop, allowing the captionist to voice questions or comments for the student if the student so desires.

It is important for administrators as well as students to understand that all deaf and/or hard of hearing students have different needs. C-Print captioning is not always the best classroom option for such students. For deaf students whose primary language is ASL, C-Print may not be as helpful. For students whose primary language is English and who have experienced some level of hearing loss, C-Print can be a wonderfully useful tool in the classroom.
