Specialized Equipment

  • For visually impaired patrons, a PC based information access reading machine is available. The computer-based software includes open book, zoomtext and jaws. The computer scans printed materials and verbalizes text displayed on the screen. Contact the Multimedia Center at 273-5009.
  • Rush Rhees Library also offers SmartView, a camera unit with computer interface that will enlarge text. This machine can show images in color, black-and-white, or reverse image. It can magnify items up to 50 times. For more information, contact the Rush Rhees Reference Desk at 275-4478.
  • Also available in Rush Rhees Library is an Assistive Listening System. This is a portable, high-performance, wireless system composed of one transmitter and five receivers. The system allows one-way transmission of a speaker's voice to hearing impaired group members, by using an FM radio signal. This equipment is available for use in the Office of the Dean of River Campus Libraries at 275-4461.
  • A Juliet Pro 60 Braille embosser prints on both sides of a page with a 40-character wide embossing line and 60-character per second productivity. The embosser and Duxburry Braille translator are available for use by contacting the Multimedia Center at 273-5009.
  • TTY/TDD telephones are available at Rush Rhees and Carlson Circulation desks. A TTY/TDD telephone is a device with a standard keyboard that allows people to type messages back and forth over the telephone lines.
