Negative attitudes about people with disabilities can be more disabling than any condition. They define people by their disability, as if it comprises the entirety of their being. They isolate and segregate people with disabilities, hurting their pride and damaging their confidence.
Stereotyping prevails on college campuses no more than it does in the larger society. However, when it does manifest itself at a college or graduate school, it perpetuates the prejudicial treatment of people with disabilities elsewhere, undermines their scholastic performance, and reinforces the negatives they are trying to surmount at a critical juncture in their lives.
