Reading Comprehension Problems

Reading may be slow and deliberate, and comprehension may be impaired for a student with a learning disability, particularly when dealing with large quantities of material. For such a student, comprehension and speed are expedited dramatically with the addition of auditory input.

  • Make a required book list available prior to the first day of class to allow students to begin their reading early or to have texts put on tapes.
  • Provide students with chapter outlines or study guides that cue them to key points in their reading.
  • Read aloud material that is written on the board or that is given in hand outs or transparencies.
