Service and Stewardship:
Recent Activities

Following are some of the recent Administration and Finance Division activities, driven by the division's mission.

Communications

  • Expansion of the annual Administration and Finance Conference
  • Augmentation and updating of the Administration and Finance Web site
  • Establishment of the Administrative Forum (including business representatives from all divisions and Central Administration)
  • Widespread dissemination of information about the University's new Code of Conduct for Business Activities

Compliance, Business Policy

  • Expanded central oversight and coordination of regulatory compliance through the University Compliance Committee
  • Creation of a Code of Conduct for Business Activities, providing an overarching code in accordance with the external regulatory environment
  • Graduation of hundreds of individuals from CLASP (Continuous Learning for Administrators of Sponsored Programs), a classroom-based educational program for sponsored programs compliance
  • Initial development of an Audit Office three-year plan for improving and extending auditing services

Financial

  • Institution of quarterly financial statements
  • Greater divisional and departmental use of Internet budgeting system
  • More comprehensive financial budgeting analyses and reporting
  • Approval and publication of the University endowment spending policy

Safety

  • Compilation of data on employee injuries, with followup initiatives on workplace safety and notification procedures
  • Continuing work on emergency preparedness initiatives and protocols for reacting to changes in national threat levels

Savings

  • Multi-million dollar, continuing savings through self-insurance
  • Eight-figure savings to University/Strong Health through combined efforts of Corporate Purchasing, University departments, and suppliers
  • Commencement of a cogeneration initiative that will substantially avoid energy cost increases, upgrade the University heating/cooling infrastructure, and make better use of fuel

Systems

  • Implementation of a new Human Resources Management System (HRMS) to replace an outmoded system that could no longer be upgraded and to meet compliance requirements
  • Pilot of a Secure Pay program to allow departments to securely receive payments via the Web
