Commission on Women and Gender Equity Wants Your Input

The Commission on Women and Gender Equity in Academia has established four working groups and is seeking input from the University community. They're inviting all members of the community to share input, experiences, and suggestions using the form on their recently updated website. Making the World a Healthier Place


“If all of us would walk out of our cubicles and face big issues collectively, just imagine how much we could do for this world,” says Chunlei Guo, who is tackling global sanitation issues with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Guo, an optical physicist and professor at the Institute of Optics, and Kirsi Jarvinen-Seppo, the Founders’ Distinguished Professor of Pediatric Allergy and an associate professor of pediatric allergy/immunology and allergy/immunology and rheumatology, were recently awarded separate $1.5 million grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—the largest such grants ever awarded in the University’s history. Message from President Seligman on Tax Bill Implications

The United States Senate and House of Representatives have approved their versions of tax reform legislation, with the goal of sending a final bill to President Donald Trump for his approval by the end of the year. As of today, it appears an agreement may have been reached, although details are pending. "Overall, the final tax reform measure may have significant consequences for the University of Rochester in a number of ways, making higher education and health care less affordable, less accessible, and less financially secure," writes University President and CEO Joel Seligman in this message to the University community, which outlines the University’s concerns.

Alumni Spotlight: Jeannine Shao Collins


Jeannine Shao Collins ’86 hopes to set young female entrepreneurs on a path to success. She cofounded Girl Starter, a New York City-based media company whose mission is to give girls the tools they need to develop their potential as business leaders. The company includes a website (GirlStarter.com), a reality TV show, and other media channels. Read about her in the current issue of Rochester Review.

In 2014, a Rochester high school was on the brink of closure. Since then, a partnership with the University has helped East High School to forge a new culture and commitment to revival. Read more in the current edition of Rochester Review and here.

Hope for Humanity


Rwanda-native Ian Manzi ’18 is promoting intercultural understanding alongside a new generation of his fellow citizens. Last year, Ian and Derrick Murekezi ’19 received a $10,000 grant from Davis Projects for Peace to run a peace camp in Rwanda. Catch Ian’s passion for making a global difference in this video.

Help Visiting Students from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands

Months after Hurricanes Maria and Irma made landfall in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, universities and colleges in those areas are still shut down, forcing students to suspend their degree programs. In response to this, the University of Rochester is offering up to 12 displaced college students a tuition-free guest semester program for spring 2018.
