NEWS FOR ALUMNI

Show Us Your Town: Chicago

The Windy City, the City of Big Shoulders, the Second City—no matter what you call it, the 1,900 alumni in Chicago love to show off their town. Suzanne Sawada ’73 and four other Chicago-area alumni take us on a tour and talk about why they stay engaged with their alma mater.

One Family, Two Generations, Three Degrees

When Giuliano Agostinho de Castro ’20 was paralyzed in a car accident at home in Brazil after his first semester, his parents, Marcia and Gilberto, joined him in Rochester to support his recovery. They ended up enrolling as students themselves.

Listening More Closely

Julia Bullock ’09E, whose vocal performances often leave classical music audiences in search of superlatives, is bringing more than her voice to her latest high-profile engagement as the 2018-19 artist-in-residence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Closed Captioning for Personal Conversations

Brandon Isobe ’10 wanted to use technology to help him communicate with his deaf father, Gerald. Along with a tech-minded friend, they developed App MyEar, an iPhone app that renders speech to text.

Making History by Continuing a Tradition

“Receiving a Nobel Prize is one of the world’s greatest honors and very few of us will ever reach that level of recognition for our work. However, I believe the spirit of Meliora is driven less by a desire for recognition and more by a relentless ambition to leave our world, and the University community, better than we found it,” writes President Richard Feldman in his latest Words from Wallis Hall message.
