University of Rochester Group Fitness Classes

The Department of Athletics and Recreation sponsors group fitness classes every semester through the Intramural Sports Program. A variety of aerobic and conditioning classes are available and are free for all full-time matriculated students. R-Club members are also eligible participants as a part of the R Club Membership Fee.

All classes are held in the MAC which is located within the Goergen Athletic Center.

Class Descriptions

Hi-Lo: A high intensity class that utilizes high and low impact techniques to develop muscle fitness. Class also includes muscle conditioning and flexibility components for a total body work out. Class Instructor: Kelly
Body Conditioning: Through non-aerobic exercise, participants will work toward developing muscle fitness. Class members will work opposing muscle groups, abs and back, and conclude with flexibility. Some emphasis on basic step movements. ***No previous step aerobic experience is necessary. Class Instructor: Kelly

Yoga: This Iyengar yoga class is a combination of last semester’s beginner and intermediate classes. We will focus on the Sun Salutations, Standing Asanas, Inversions, Backbends and Arm, Shoulder and Neck/Head Balances. 20-30 minutes of each class will be dedicated to breathing and relaxation. Previous yoga experience is helpful. Class Instructor: Colleen

Pilates: Joseph Pilates studied many existing exercise systems, sports, medicines and philosophies to create a system that strengthens,stretches and tones the entire body through the use of low repetitions of many integrated exercises. Pilates can help anyone to connect their mind and body, improve posture and balance, and gain strongerand leaner muscles. Class Instructor: Rachel

Fitness Center

Overview

The Fitness Center boasts a roomful of 28 pieces of Cybex selectorized equipment and 10 Life Fitness Treadmills, 12 Precor Cross Trainers, 5 Precor Recumbent Bikes, 5 Precor Upright Bikes, 4 Expresso Virtual Reality Bikes, 4 StairMaster Steppers Steppers, 4 Cybex Arc Trainers, 1 Gravitron, and 5, flat screen TV's along with Cardio Theater. The Free Weight area features numerous free weights and benches.

Participation

The fitness center is open for use by all full-time UR students. Faculty, staff, retired staff, alumni, spouses, dependents (16 and under 23 years of age), and friends of the university may gain access to the Fitness Center by becoming members of the R-Club.

Rules and Regulations

To keep our facilities in the best condition, we need the help and cooperation of the people who use them. By adhering to these guidelines, you will contribute greatly to creating a well-run and well-used center:
  • Only individuals with current full-time student IDs, or R Club members are permitted in the center
  • ID cards must be shown each time you enter the building
  • No CHILDREN under the age of 16
  • Please wipe off all controls, seats & railings when you are finished with your workout.
  • All cardiovascular equipment is limited to 30 minute use when others are waiting.
  • All Cybex, cardiovascular and free weight equipment are on a first come first served basis. Please allow others to use equipment white you rest between sets.
  • Headphones are required when using radios, CD and tape players.
  • Proper workout attire (shirt, shorts, sweats, sneakers) must be worn at all times. Shirts must be left on. No workboots.
  • No food or beverage is permitted in the Fitness Center (only exception is non-breakable water bottles).
  • No book bags, jackets, or boots allowed in the center.
  • Clear pathways are to be maintained at all times. No personal belongings (including water bottles) are to be left on the workout floor.
  • The Fitness Center, and the Department of Athletics & Recreation are NOT responsible for lost or stolen items. Staff members will NOT hold IDs, membership cards, wallets, keys, etc.
  • No unauthorized personal training or rehabilitation services are permitted.
  • Violation of any policy or any actions deemed inappropriate may result in the acting participant's membership being suspended or revoked. Any member displaying inappropriate actions (abusing equipment, verbal abuse of personnel or other members) will have violated established policies and procedures.
