Masters Swim Program
Masters Swimming is an organized program for adults (19 and older) interested in swimming. Organized practices follow the academic calendar from September to May. Members participate in a variety of ways including fitness swimming, local competition, and national and international competition. As a member of a Masters Club you choose your level of involvement.
What are some of the benefits of joining a Masters Swim Club?
First you will be joining a group of people, like yourself, who enjoy getting into and staying in shape by swimming. This means that you'll be working out in a fun and supportive environment. You'll also have a coach available to develop workouts and offer suggetsions on how to improve your stokes. As a member of U.S. Masters Swimming, you will receive insurance coverage during all sanctioned events and organized workouts. This includes accident and liability insurance. Also you will receive a copy of SWIM Magazine every other month.
Membership
All club members must join the River Campus Sports Complex R Club. For Faculty/Staff and Alumni the cost is $202.00 for a one year membership. For those people that are not associated with the University it will be $395.00 for a one year membership. This membership will allow you to join the Masters team as well as having access to the Sports Complex throughout the year. The facilities that R Club members are allowed to use include the indoor track, swimming pool, basketball courts, racquetball courts, squash courts and tennis courts. In addition to joining the R Club, each member must pay a $30 yearly registering fee for Niagara District Masters Swimming. This fee includes a newsletter, the Water Power Gazette, and a subscription to SWIM (Masters national bimonthly magazine). Each member does not have to join Niagara Masters swimming, but you must join if you want to attend competitions.
Practices and Meets
Practices are generally held three times per week: Monday and Thursday from 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM and Saturdays from 7:30AM - 9AM. The season extends from September to May. Practices will include technique work, interval training, race pacing, starting techniques, and video analysis. Additional topics may be covered, which include nutrition, goal setting, mental training, and race preparation.
Meets are held about once a month in the Upstate New York area. As a member you are welcome to attend any of these meets.
