Both league announced their all-association selections this week. For the UAA, this is a first. The UAA has traditionally named a team in March, upon conclusion of its championship tournament. After the 2008 season, the UAA baseball and softball coaches voted to select two teams – an all-tournament team in March to celebrate accomplishments during play, and an All-Association team to be determined at the end of the regular season.
Nine Yellowjackets earned a total of 10 Liberty League honors. Ryan Sullivan was recognized as both a catcher and a relief pitcher. Three athletes were named First Team All-Liberty League: Dan Brien at first base, Andy Cannon in the outfield, and Mike Park on the mound.
The Second Team All-Liberty League honorees were Nate Stein at short, Jay Jay Vanderstyne as the designated hitter, Paul Toland as a starting pitcher, and Sullivan in dual roles of catcher and reliever.
Outfielders Alex Caghan and Matt Francis were accorded Honorable Mention All-Liberty League status.
In the UAA balloting, Stein, Sullivan (as a catcher), Vanderstyne (as an infielder), and Park were First Team honorees. Brien and Toland were honored on the Second Team. Caghan was selected as the UAA Rookie of the Year.
Park has a 6-1 record with a 2.82 ERA. In 11 appearances (nine starts), he has pitched 51.0 innings, allowed 38 hits, 21 runs, 16 earned runs, walked 27, and struck out 65. Opponents are hitting .207 against him. He has two saves and has shared two shutouts.
Toland has a 6-1 record as well. In 11 appearances (seven starts), he has pitched 59.2 innings, allowed 63 hits, 22 runs (17 earned), walked 12, and struck out 50. Opponents are batting .269. He has one save.
Brien wields a .336 stick with 13 doubles, two triples, and three home runs. He has 23 RBIs. Stein is hitting .359 with 27 runs scored, 10 doubles, three triples, two HRs, and 36 RBIs.
Sullivan is hitting .348 with six doubles and two triples. He has 20 RBIs. On the mound, he has a 1.45 ERA with a 1-1 record in 18.2 innings. He has allowed 16 hits, five runs (three earned), walked three, and struck out seven.
Vanderstyne has a .348 average as well. He has scored 27 runs and driven in 25. He has seven doubles, four triples, and one HR. Cannon as scored a team-high 39 runs. He is batting .324 with eight doubles, two triples, and 24 RBIs. He leads Rochester in steals with 31.
Caghan is second in steals with 22. He is hitting .307 with 32 runs scored and 18 RBIs. He has also pitched 7.1 innings in relief. Francis is the team’s RBI leader with 38. He is hitting .305 and has scored 35 runs.
Rochester will host St. John Fisher at 7:30 pm Friday at Frontier Field. The game comes two days after the Yellowjackets edged the Cardinals, 5-4, at Dugan Yard.
