Rochester won the Liberty League regular season title at 18-4 and earned the right to host the LL playoffs. The Yellowjackets broke into the Division III National Poll, conducted by the American Baseball Coaches Association. They rose as high as #19 in mid-season. The final record of 28-13 was one victory shy of tying the school mark for wins (29, set in 1989).
A Rochester native, Reina is a graduate of Gates-Chili High School where he starred at shortstop for the Spartans. He then took his talents to Monroe Community College where he played under Hall of Fame coach H. David Chamberlain. In 1995, Reina was selected as the Region III Player of the Year and a second team All- American shortstop. He was awarded a full athletic scholarship to Division I, Long Island University - Brooklyn Campus. A two-year starter for the Blackbirds, Reina had two solid seasons including his junior year where he hit .371 and four grand slams in a season. He graduated with a bachelors degree in physical education.
Reina then came back to Rochester and his alma mater to coach at Monroe CC. In two years at Monroe, the Tribunes tallied close to 100 wins and finished runner up in the district championships. He then accepted a two year position as a graduate assistant at The College of New Jersey (Division III).
While at TCNJ, Reina worked as the infield instructor and recruiting coordinator. The Lions won their first Conference championship in 18 years in 2000. In May of 2001, Reina graduated with a Masters of Education Degree.
During the summer months, Coach Reina has had a wide variety of experience in coaching all different levels. For two years he coached in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. In the summer of 2001, he worked as an assistant for the Bourne Braves, a member of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Ten of the 24 players were selected in the 2002 Major league Baseball Amateur Draft while the Braves had one of its most successful season in the program's history.
In the summer of 2002, Coach Reina was asked by Major League Baseball to work in southern Germany. The purpose of this trip was to further baseball in Germany. He worked with players from ages 7-45 and also worked with softball players in different clubs. Joe and his wife Chandra live in Gates with their three sons Michael, Braedon, and Aaron.
2006 BASEBALL: Named Second Team All-Liberty League in his sophomore season for his skills in right field and at the plate... Posted 56 putouts and 25 assists in 92 chances and turned one double play... Recorded 41 hits in 129 at-bats; he hit nine doubles and one homerun in addition to scoring 22 runs and posting the team’s third highest RBI count (21)... Walked six times and was 3-6 in stolen base attempts.
2005 BASEBALL: Started in one game while playing in a total of nine... In seven at bats managed to score four runs... Had eight assists in the field.
SCHOLASTICALLY: Earned two varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and baseball at Victor HS... Named the Co-Captain of the baseball team as a senior and the volleyball team's Most Improved award as a junior... Won the baseball Leadership Award as a sophomore, the Sportsmanship Award as a senior, the Hustle Award for vollebyall as a junior, and the State Tournament Sportsmanhip Award in volleyball as a senior... Earned All Country honors in baseball twice and All Conference honors once in volleyball... Helped the volleyball team win the League and Sectional Championships junior and senior years as well as the State Championship senior year... Led the baskebatll team to wing the League Championship senior year... Led the baseball team to win the Sectional Championship sophomore and senior years, the League Championship junior and senior years and the Class A State Championship senior year... Set the school record for doubles in a season (11) as a junior and had a career batting average of .430... Helped his senior year baseball team break 16 school records including runs per game (12) and doubleplays made (17).
