The Saxons had a 37-yard punt return for a touchdown, a 60-yard breakaway run for a TD, and a 98-yard interception return for a score. Alfred led, 30-7, at halftime. The Saxons intercepted four passes, two apiece against Braezen Subick and Patrick Keegan. Andy Breidigam saw game action in the fourth quarter.
Clarence Onyiriuka broke the 1,000-yard single-season rushing barrier. He finished with 92 yards on 33 carries. He is the fifth man in Rochester’s 120-year football history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single-season.
Onyiriuka scored both Rochester TDs. He ran five yards for a score early in the second quarter, then scored on a two-yard plunge in the second half.
Alfred’s Jared Manzer, who played high school ball with Rochester’s Trenten Tully, scored three TDs. In the first quarter, he returned an interception 98 yards for a TD, increasing the Saxon lead to 21-0. He hauled in two TD passes in the third quarter, one for 28 yards and one for 15. Manzer finished with six catches for 75 yards.
Vinson Hendrix rushed for 129 yards for Alfred, including as 60-yard TD run in the first quarter. Alfred rushed for 243 yards and threw for 173 more.
Rochester produced 116 yards on the ground, but was unable to get the passing game in synch. The Yellowjackets combined to hit 10 of 25 passes for 60 net yards and the four INTs.
This game completed the non-conference schedule for Rochester. The Yellowjackets play at St. Lawrence on November 7 and host Hobart in the Centennial Cup game on November 14.
