Why Your Support is Crucial
Beyond the Bricks and Mortar
The Goergen Athletic Center officially opened in October, 2000, during the University's
Sesquicentennial Celebration. The first-rate facility represents the University's commitment
to campus life and the understanding that fitness and athletics play an important role in the
overall educational experience.
Whether you were an occasional user, played intramurals, or competed as a varsity athlete,
the old Alumni Gym was an important place for your education outside the classroom. The Goergen
Athletic Center has now become a hub for the entire campus community. Up to 2,000
people a day pass through the front doors with 500 of these alone using the new fitness center.
We now need support that goes beyond the bricks and mortar. The very fact that this building
has become such a vital and well-used center of campus life means that the highest levels of
support will be needed to sustain its vitality.
Financial support is essential to the programs and activities that give this building life:
- Support for the non-varsity programs and recreational activities that allow us to attract
and retain the best students, faculty, and staff.
- Support for the renewal and replacement of fitness equipment (e.g., the treadmills have
already accumulated over a million miles since the center opened in April!)
- Appropriate support for our intercollegiate programs, enabling us to recruit the best
students who are also the best athletes, provide quality instruction and requisite equipment,
provide the ability to compete against other high quality institutions, and provide the
necessary medical training for this level of competition.
- Support for the sports information services to tell our story.
Athletics and recreation form an important part of a student's education. We have built
an outstanding new facility in keeping with the level of excellence that is the University
of Rochester. Your support is needed to fill this center with the programs and activities
that provide an experience equal to that excellence now and in the future.
