CHICAGO - Rochester defeated Carnegie Mellon, three sets to one, in the seventh place match at the University Athletic Association women's volleyball championships.
The victory came right after a tough five-set loss to Case Western Reserve in the final group match. Case took the opener, 25-18, but Rochester won the next two, 25-19 and 27-25. Case forced a fifth set by winning set four, 25-23. The Spartans won the finale, 15-13.
Against Carnegie, Rochester won the opener, 25-19. The next three matches were all decided by two points. Carnegie evened the match with a 26-24 win in set two. Rochester won in sets three and four by identical 25-23 scores.
In the Case match, Kellu Mulrey had 20 kills. Casey Larsen had 12 kills, 13 digs, and three aces. Alma Guevara had 15 kills and 13 digs. Rachel Bender had 35 assists and 14 digs, while Lauren Bujnicki had 16 digs.
Against Carnegie Mellon, Mulrey had 22 kills and two aces. Larsen produced another double-double with 15 kills and 13 digs. Guevara had 13 kills, 13 digs, and four aces. Bujnicki had 15 digs. Bender had 51 assists and 13 digs.
Rochester finished the regular season at 18-20. Case wound up 23-10, and Carnegie was 17-15.
